Isolation
Artists During Nazi Rule between 1933 and 1945
During Nazi rule, Jewish artists in Germany were persecuted, as were those who opposed the regime or belonged to the cultural avant-garde. Those prevented from fleeing the country inevitably withdrew from public life. A studio in the countryside or a clandestine existence were often the only ways to survive and carry on working in their own country. Few managed to circumvent the censors. Rarely did anyone risk expressing a dissident viewpoint. Some artists found other occupations or new themes or else developed a new visual style in order to maintain their artistic activity.
